Cluckingham Palace with Brandee Smith

Have you ever considered raising backyard chickens? That adventure is no longer a thing of the past for downtown dwellers. During the 1940’s many, if not most, in town families had backyard chickens and kitchen gardens. Remember Victory Gardens??

Who knows if it will ever become as popular again. In recent years more and more families are going back to the old ways of family provision, self sustainability, urban farming.. whatever the name, it is becoming a thing to do. The Crazy Chicken Lady era is definitely under way!

Librarian Hilda (happy to be chicken lady’s neighbor) getting to know Brandee’s first ever baby chicks.

Here at Princeton Public Library, we had the privilege to chat with one Princeton Chicken Lady. In this podcast interview, Brandee shares her own Chicken keeping experience… the ups and downs, the laughter and tears, the practical and the extras. As a bonus, we hear the incredible story of her most rare chicken, Double Bubble. We hope you enjoy this delightful conversation as much as we did!

Here is a Chicken Keeping book recommended by Brandee:

Are there any backyard gardeners in Princeton? Are there any rural Princeton Chicken Keepers with space to care for a larger flock? Are you or your neighbors doing other things in your yards for sustainability or environmental conservation? We would like to talk with you! Contact us if you are willing to share your knowledge, experience, and encouragement with your neighbors.
